Great Books: The Shape of Ideas

“Everyone has something creative that they want to do that they’re not living up to, or maybe they’ve taken a wrong turn”
Grant Snider

Grant Snider summarizes his bio in the following terms:
Grant lives in Wichita, Kansas with his wife, daughter, and two sons, where he also practices orthodontics. You can often find him carrying a sketchbook, lost in his own thoughts.
His book, The Shape of Ideas. An Illustrated Exploration of Creativity is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful things I own.

He took up cartooning when he was about to start dental school. In college, he used it to blow off steam after a tough class and now he continues to do it to stay in touch with his inner life.

Paradoxically, by reading (and eyeing) his book we get in touch with our own inner life, and it is heartwarming. The colour range, the expressive force of the apparently simple drawings, and the delicate tone all ally to make the reading experience memorable. It is an emotional homage to our frustrations and failures, to our habits, dreams and hopes.

If I were to choose only one book out of the ones I read in 2018, it'd most definitely be this one.
