Letters in Films: Finding Vivian Maier

Finding Vivian Maier is a documentary about a mysterious nanny, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that were hidden in storage lockers and, discovered decades later, is now among the 20th century's greatest photographers. It is directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel.

Currently, Vivian Maier’s body of work is being archived and cataloged for the enjoyment of others and for future generations. John Maloof is at the core of this project after reconstructing most of the archive, in fact, roughly 90% of it has already been reconstructed, and Vivian’s work is part of a renaissance in interest in the art of Street Photography.

Interestingly enough, it seems that she corresponded with a printer in France hinting that she might have wanted to show her work. But John Maloof said in an interview he only knows that this person had printed her postcards before (French landscapes), and he is not sure if the letter was ever completed or if it's just a draft or if just didn't work out.

The thing  is that Vivian Maier labored for decades creating a huge body of work never tainted by public consumption. Was she scared of rejection? Criticism?

We will never know, but you will agree that her photographs show a talented clever eye and a genius vision.
