| The Love Letter by Pietro Antoni Rotari |
Pietro Antoni Rotari (1707-1762) was an Italian painter was apprenticed as a child by the Flemish engraver Robert Van Auden-Aerdt and later Antonio Balestra. He worked in Vienna for Empress Maria Theresa and later for the Saxon court and the Imperial family in St. Petersburg.
The Love Letter is an example of the genre upon which his fame rests: elegant and idealized bust- and half-length studies of attractive young women exhibiting a broad range of expressions such as melancholy, surprise, joy and languor.
