Letters in Painting: John Everett Millais

Reading Letters by John Everett Millais
John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was an English painter and illustrator who was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was a precocious artist who started to paint when he was 4 and later specialized in social subjects, realistic paintings such as The Order of Release depicting the wife of a rebel Scottish soldier who has been imprisoned after the Jacobite rising of 1745, arriving with an order securing his release.

The painting Reading Letters is a lesser-known piece conveying the excitement of opening a letter.
