It is typical in Postcrossing meetups to create a special postcard
commemorating the event. Well, for our Postcrossing Meetup this Saturday, we
had originally planned to organize a contest together with the local council,
where people would be able to send their own postcards (either photographs or
their own creations). We thought this would have been the best option because it
would have allowed everybody to participate and undoubtedly to have many good
options to choose from. However, due to several variables, it could not be
done.
Thankfully, Luís Teira
came to the rescue and offered to design one. We put together the photos we
both had of the area and finally we chose one of his views of Ribeira from a
lookout point.
The front part of the card |
Are you familiar with GF (Greetings From) postcards? They are cards which show a picture from a given country or city and include some relevant data, such as its number of inhabitants, main cultural attractions or typical products. Postcrossers know them and many collect them, because they can have a lot of different bits of information about many countries in a small space.
So Luís suggested creating a GF using the photo in the front and
maybe choose a poem to include on the back part. We thought about Aquilino Iglesia Alvariño’s (1909-1961) “Polo correo do vento” or Manuel Antonio’s (1900-1930) calligram poem
“Excelsior.” We ended up choosing the latter because Manuel Antonio was from Rianxo, a
neighboring council; and also because it makes reference to the compass with
its different directions, which as Luís said, constitutes a good symbol of the
way the postcards are going to be travelling all over the world. And of course
the obvious, that it is written in different languages.
