Ribeira III Education Fair: April 27-30

Yesterday we had the opportunity to present some activities at the third Education Fair held here in Ribeira. As the council indicates, this event has the aim of giving visibility to the work and projects that are being done in different schools and institutions (such as Ámbar or A Creba) in Ribeira. The programme can be seen below.

There were lots of interesting projects presented in the different stands, but I have selected just a few that caught my attention.

And of course, in our stand we presented some of our current projects: book club, theatre group Seize the Day, postcrossing activities, traveling notebooks and regular class work.

Postcard Exchange: Cards from South Carolina Arrive to CEIP Heroínas de Sálvora!

Teresa Hernández, teacher and secretary at CEIP Heroínas de Sálvora has expressed her students' delight at receiving the beautiful, varied cards arriving from Elena Castillo and her students from Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

The Sullivan's Island lighthouse or Charleston Light (1862)

If we research a little bit about Sullivan's Island we see that it was known as O'Sullivan's Island, named for Captain Florence O'Sullivan, who was stationed there as a lighthouse keeper in the late 17th century.  Of course, I heard lighthouse and my eyes lit up, for I am a lover of these beacons by the sea. The Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, commonly known as "Charleston Light" holds a unique title in Caroline Lighthouse lore as one of the most modern lighthouses in the country, due to its unique triangular and slim structure which is broken up into two black and white color blocks. It is hard to miss and a distinctive local landmark that hovers over the beach scene.

Postcard Exchange: CEIP HEROÍNAS DE SÁLVORA

As we had pointed out in a previous post, the postcard exchanges among schools have already started, which is very exciting!

By way of example, students from CEIP Frións and CEIP Heroínas de Sálvora will be exchanging cards with a school from South Carolina in the USA.

Teresa Hernández, a teacher who works at CEIP Heroínas de Sálvora who is also taking part in the traveling notebook project, has kindly sent us some photographs of her students writing multilingual postcards to send to their new American penpals. Look at all those cute happy faces!

Let me also use this opportunity to recommend a visit to the fantastic blog that they have been using for this past year to let others know about a project they have been carrying out among 3 different schools with the aim of promoting art in school.
